Shar and I provide “hands on” interactive drumming for smaller groups of 20 participants to large groups of 100+ participants. We bring an authentic djembe drum for each participant to use while they learn music through beginner friendly traditional rhythms, singing, dance, and group based activities that foster joy and community.

Hands-on drumming information

More Information

Hands-on drumming can be hosted as a private/closed event such as a workshops in which I teach the same fixed number of participants during the full duration of the session. Shar and I also run open events such as community events or lunchtime drumming in which participants can come and go while we teach shorter interactive songs and dances, leaving participants energized as they continue through their day. I specialize in tailoring hands-on drumming to fit many different occasions and to give your participants an engaging and memorable experience. Some examples of programs and workshops focus areas include: African cultural drumming workshop for student clubs and events, multicultural events during and after school, college events and celebrations, lunch time interactive drumming K-12th grade, Black History Month celebrations, community based events, Wellness, Mental Health, professional development, employee development, community engagement, social justice initiatives, Cultural Arts Education, and more!

Below is an example of an “open” interactive drumming event at a school multicultural fair

in which people can come and go, visiting our drum session throughout the 60-minute service.

Before the Session

Shar and I will arrive with ample time to set up, parking in a predetermined unloading area. After checking in with you, we will unload all drums, equipment, and sound system to a preferred drumming area. We assist in setting up chairs for participants to sit and play drums. For some events with limited time, we keep our equipment on the side ready to go for a quick transition. After a quick introduction, we will start the drumming session by inviting participants to sit down at a drum.

During the session

Shar and I talk about the African djembe drum, African culture, and the basics of playing the djembe before teaching beginner friendly rhythms, singing, and dancing. For events where people come and go visiting various booths, we give time for other participants to rotate after each 5-10 minute song. This gives more people a chance to participate in the drumming.

After the session

After the full 60 minutes of programming, we always thank participants for jamming along and let the Master of Ceremony take over after a closing drum roll. We then pack up all instruments and assist by putting away chairs and ensure the area is clean.
