Interactive African drumming

Donté and Shar provide “hands on” interactive drumming for smaller groups of 20 participants to large groups of 100+ participants. Each participant will get an authentic djembe drum to use while learning about West African culture through beginner friendly traditional rhythms, singing, African Dance, and group based activities that foster joy and community.

Example of an interactive drumming session

Below is an example of an “open” interactive drumming event at a school multicultural fair

in which people can come and go, visiting the drum session throughout the 60-minute service.

Before the Session

Donte and Shar will arrive with ample time to set up, parking in a predetermined unloading area. After checking in with you, they will unload all drums, equipment, and sound system to a preferred drumming area. They will assist in setting up chairs for participants to sit and play drums. For some events with limited time, they will have everything on the side ready to go for a quick set up. After a quick introduction, Donte and Shar will start the drumming session by inviting participants to sit down at a drum.

During the session

After staff introduction, Donte and Shar will start their set. They talk about the djembe drum, African culture, and the basics of playing the djembe before teaching beginner friendly rhythms, singing, and dancing. For events where people come and go visiting various booths, we give time for other participants to rotate after each 10-13 minute song. This gives more people a chance to participate in the drumming.

After the session

After the full 60 minutes of programming, Donté always thanks participants for jamming along and we let the Master of Ceremony take over after a closing drum roll. Donté and Shar then pack up all instruments and assist your staff in putting away chairs to ensure the area is clean.
