Your students will learn about music while they drum, sing, dance, lead group based activities, and play fun rhythm games. Shar and I bring a drum for each of your students to use during our class because drumming encourages teamwork, focus, and discipline while also giving your students a creative outlet for self-expression. As performers, we keep our teaching style exciting, fun, and encourage creativity at the core of your students’ experience. Shar and I can deliver a single Pop Up “Drum Day”, multi-session programs, and even deliver a full program in which your students showcase what they’ve learned in a culminating performance for their parents and community.

More Information

Shar and I are popular vendors because we combine engaging activities while teaching music which works great in After School settings! We bring each of your students an authentic West African Djembe Drum and other instruments for hands-on learning during each session. I teach basic hand-drumming technique before starting beginner friendly rhythms, songs, and dances. Shar and I also use fun rhythm-based games and activities to keep your students engaged. Your site can book a one-time pop up “Drum Day” to bring an exciting activity on a select day. You can also request repetitive classes to build on your students skills and even full programming which would include ending with a showcase. This is where your students invite their families to an ELP partnered “Family Drum Night” during after school hours. If you have a summer, winter, spring, Saturday school, or community school program and you also want your students to participate in a fun activity, Shar and I book year-round and work with all grade levels (TK-12th)!

Below is an example of an After School Program in which 20 K-1st Graders participate.

Before the Session

Shar and I will arrive with ample time to help set up for the session. We will check in with you prior to setting up the drumming area, arranging chairs, and unloading all drums, instruments, and props for your students. Set up can be for smaller groups of 15-20 students and even for After School “shows” with over 100+ drums for all of your students. We enjoy doing multiple rotations so that more students the opportunity to participate during enrichment time. Sessions can be done in a cafeteria, gym, classroom, library, and even outdoors (weather permitted).

Start of the Session

At the start of the session, Shar and I assist in getting all students seated, we go over expectations, and teach beginning technique in fun ways to get students warmed up. Each student will use a traditionally made West African Djembe Drum hand carved from wood. We only use real Djembe drums because they provide an authentic, high quality sound, and resonant vibration that is sure to keep your students synchronized no matter what age or skill level.

The Drum Session

As trained artist and entertainers, Shar and I will teach your students using “dynamic programming”. This means each program is delivered with the goals of keeping students engaged and having fun while they learn music. Shar and I will teach rhythms, drum solos, singing, and dancing while encouraging creativity and improvisation. Your students will also assist with facilitating group based activities, fun rhythm games are played to keep learning fun for students, and we have discussion time where students learn about geography, music theory, and values.

End of the Session

Students have the opportunity to share what they learned, we talk about what to expect in the next class, and end with a community drum roll. Shar and I handle cleaning up and returning the space or classroom to normal.
