Donté and Shar - After School Programs

Before the Session

Donte and Shar will arrive with ample time to help set up for the session. They check in with you prior to setting up the drumming area, arranging chairs, and unloading all drums, instruments, and props for your students. Set up can be for smaller groups of 15-20 students and even for After School “shows” with over 100+ drums for all of your students. We love doing multiple rotations so that more students the opportunity to participate.

Start of the Session

At the start of the session, Donte and Shar assist in getting all students seated, they go over expectations, explain the importance of the traditional African djembe drum, and teach beginning technique in fun ways to get students warmed up. Each students will use a traditionally made West African Djembe Drum hand carved from wood. Each Djembe provides an authentic, high quality sound, and resonant vibration that is sure to keep the group synchronized no matter what age or skill level.

Interactive Drum Session

Because Donté and Shar are also professional entertainers, they instruct kids using “dynamic programming”. This means each program is delivered with the goal of keeping students engaged and having fun while they follow along on the drum. Donté and Shar will teach traditional African rhythms, singing, and dancing while encouraging creativity and improvisation. Your students will also assist with facilitating group based activities, fun rhythm games are played to keep energy high, and we have discussion time where students learn about geography using an African Map, and we talk about themes found in the songs that highlight community values.

End of the Session

Students have the opportunity to share what they learned, we talk about what to expect in the next class, and end with a community drum roll. Donte and Shar handle cleaning up and returning the space or classroom to normal.
